We’ve mentioned the Goodman Community Center on this blog a few times in passing, so we figured it was about time to really fill you in on everything that goes on there!
The mission of the Goodman Community Center is to:
– Help build a sense of community among neighborhood residents
– Provide opportunities for social activities, education, social development and nourishment to at-risk children
– Provide opportunities for social activities, education, social development, and nourishment to older adults
– Provide short-term emergency food relief
– Organize and sponsor community events for education, socializing and celebration
– Organize and offer volunteer opportunities
– Help community groups organize and seek assistance from government officials, businesses and social service agencies
– Provide space for individuals and groups to meet, learn and celebrate
– Provide information about community issues, people and events
– Refer people requesting assistance to appropriate individuals and agencies
And they do all of this in a variety of ways.
The center offers programming for both children and teens (as well as adults and seniors).
Their preschool program is a city accredited state licensed childcare that accepts full- and part-time enrollment for ages 30 months through 5 years. There is currently a wait list. The center offers programs for elementary school children including afterschool childcare, recreational drop-in, and 4th & 5th grade socials. The Goodman Community Center offers programs for middle school youth designed to enhance their success at school, at home and in the community. Activities include separate afterschool programming for middle school girls and middle school boys, as well as drop-in recreation and socials. High schooler drop-in activities include Teen Tutoring and Mentoring, MEDIAWORKS, and an Open Art Lab. They can also enroll in programs like TEEN (Teen Education and Employment Network) which offers workplace-based educational experiences to help young adults develop marketable skills.
The Lussier Teen Center is open after school for drop-in activities including video games, arcade games, music, computers with wireless access, free healthy snacks and a concession stand offering inexpensive snack foods. Staff are on hand at all times to provide a safe and friendly environment. No registration required.

The Loft inside the Lussier Teen Center offers a drug- and alcohol-free safe entertainment zone for youth ages 13-19. The Loft is equipped with state-of-the-art sound equipment, stage, dance floor, concession stand and game room. Local musicians and traveling bands bring their talents to the Loft stage on some Friday and Saturday nights.
