Madison Children’s Museum – Grand Opening!

The new Madison Children’s Museum opens this Saturday, August 14, with a Grand Opening Celebration that runs all weekend long! We are so excited to see the completed museum!! How many of you are planning to check it out this weekend? Here’s some info on this weekend’s festivities.

The Grand Opening Celebration begins on Saturday at 9:15 am with a pre-opening parade around the museum’s new block. The family parade will feature stilt walkers, giant puppets, and opportunities galore for families to carry flags, decorate strollers, and play instruments. Then everyone is invited to help cut the giant ribbon wrapping around the entire building. The museum doors will officially open at 9:30 am!

MCM’s outdoor “campus” will offer free programs, including a 10 am performance by Ken Lonnquist and the Kenland Band. The 1838 Log Cabin grounds will feature demonstrations of period blacksmithing, floor loom weaving, and woodworking techniques by artisans from Driftless Folk School.

Saturday’s indoor festivities include special workshops and demonstrations in the new Art Studio, Rooftop Ramble, Tinkerers Workshop, and the free Community Concourse. You can find a detailed list of indoor events on the museum’s website.

Sunday, August 15, look for performances by groups such as Kanopy Dance Company and Children’s Theater of Madison, enjoy collaborative Art Studio activities with Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, meet a guest musician from Madison Symphony Orchestra, and enjoy a special edition of Overture’s Kids in the Rotunda at MCM with Stuart Stotts. Again, a complete schedule of events is located on the the museum’s website. Sunday’s events run from 10 am – 4 pm.

Sunday afternoon at 3 pm you can enjoy a tour led by Brenda Baker, MCM’s Director of Exhibits, highlighting public art in the new building. One-hundred local artists are creating works for the new museum, from large-scale sculptures to creative benches for public seating. In addition to the 100 adult artists, the museum features the work of youth artists throughout the building, including a massive bottle cap mosaic installation created by more than 12,000 area children.
