Paint Your Own Pottery

For the past two Fathers’ Days, Milena and I have painted something for her daddy, Jess. I love handmade gifts!

Last year we visited Fired Up Pottery in Cottage Grove with Tiffany and Lily. Fired Up is on the smaller side (especially when you’ve got a baby in a carseat taking up half the table), but there were only two other people there when we were there, so we didn’t feel cramped. The lady working was welcoming and really helpful when it came to showing us everything we could paint and explaining how to choose paint colors, etc. She checked in with us often, and she gave Tiffany some great ideas for different ways Lily could paint the frame she was making for her dad, Dave. She also helped paint Milena’s little foot so we could put her footprints on a mug for Jess.

Since we visited Fired Up Pottery last year, I decided that this year we would try out Studio, You in Madison. This space was much larger, with many more tables to sit at and a bigger selection of items to paint. The lady working that day (whom I assumed to be the owner) had a much more “hands-off” approach than the woman at Fired Up. After pointing me towards the paintable items around the room and showing me where the paints are, I didn’t hear much more from her until I was ready to check out. She spent most of her time at the computer at the front of the space eating her lunch, leaving me and the many other customers on our own. I definitely would have appreciated some help (especially since I was hoping Milena would paint the gift mostly on her own but wasn’t entirely sure how), but once I was situated with water and paints and the frame for Jess and a slightly squirmy toddler, I didn’t really want to get up from my spot! But Milena did a great job, and we both had a lot of fun!

I would recommend either business, although Studio, You would definitely be better for larger groups. Prices and general variety of items available seemed pretty similar.

Fired Up Pottery is located at 425 West Cottage Grove Road (839-5000). They are open Sunday from 1 – 5 pm, Monday – Saturday from 11 am – 7/8 pm (may close 1 hour early if no artists, so call first).

New specials in July: Monday Mania, 10% off pottery every Monday or Wacky Wednesday, 10% off glass, every Wednesday.

Fired Up also offers a Summer Art Club and has three different levels of glass fusing classes. Go to their website for a complete schedule of events.

You can find Studio, You in Market Square, 6670 Odana Road (833-1393). They are open Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 11-6; Wednesday 11-7; Friday and Saturday 11-6 (closed Sunday).

Appointments aren’t necessary at either studio – walk-ins are always welcome!

  1. Hi! This is Kim from Fired Up Pottery, and I’m writing this in May of 2013. We moved the business about 2.5 years ago to a much bigger space in Madison, at 4112 Monona Drive, so try us out in our new location. The new store is 2.5 times larger than the old one, and our new phone number is 442-9900. OUr web address is http://www.fireduppottery.com. Thanks!
